I remember well an ever-faithful friend,

Velvet black hair, skirting round low withers,

Alert pointed ears, watchful even at rest,

A pup you wandered round a loving neck,

Spending hours, lying in granddads lap,

Chasing sprouts, drinking cups of tea,

With long wisdom beard and a pointed tail,

Leaving home, you promised to me faithfully,

To live long and keep my grandparents hale,

You excelled; for you lived for over thirteen years,

You waited to speak with me, I not been home awhile,

Those deep kindly eyes pleading for an end to me,

So I gave release to you, knowing your sleep was nigh,

Thank you for caring, I said these last kind words to you.
